MADRID — About 150 stores will participate in Fashion’s Night Out here, which is expected to attract almost 22,000 people to the city’s three key shopping areas.
The areas taking part are Calle Ortega y Gasset, long considered Madrid’s golden retail mile; Salamanca, and the warrenlike streets skirting Calle Almirante. Stores in those areas will stay open from 8 p.m. to midnight and will offer a range of in-store musical activities, open bars, discounts on fall merchandise, celebrities and free makeovers.
With a huge outside screen to track the goings-on, Vogue’s tent on Calle Ortega y Gasset, a small strip of which will close for the night, will host model Nieves Alvarez; Spanish designers Roberto Torretta and Angel Schlesser; Pronovias’ creative director, Manuel Mota, and jeweler Rosa Tous, said Marta Corredoira, Spanish Vogue’s subdirector of communications.
Missoni’s Lagasca store will entertain Pedro Almodóvar’s “chicas” — without the renowned film director — including Bibiana Fernández, who reportedly will sell an exclusive handbag for 30 euros, or $43 at current exchange, for charity, and the store will auction a trip to Milan.
Mango’s Velasquez store will offer discounts of up to 20 percent and free MAC makeovers. Guests at Tommy Hilfiger can bop to the jazz-bolero combo Sweet Wasabi, Chanel will set up a sidewalk terraza for drinks and nibbles and Giorgio Armani’s four stores plan presentations of the fall collection.
Some stores are taking a wait-and-see approach, however. “Retailers don’t know what to expect. They’re holding back — maybe a little Champagne and French music, but in general not a lot of fanfare,” said César Glaria, a retail representative for David Delfin. Delfin’s Salamanca shop will stay open until midnight, but nothing special is planned because the Madrid-based designer is showing earlier that day at New York Fashion Week.

DALLAS — Neiman Marcus is taking Fashion’s Night Out national.
The retailer has been gearing up for Fashion’s Night Out ever since Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour pitched the idea in March at a breakfast meeting in Paris, said Karen Katz, president and chief executive officer. Neiman’s is one of the few retailers that will be staging Fashion’s Night Out events in all its stores nationwide.
“She explained what she was trying to accomplish, to get a renewed focus on the positives of fashion and to get people out based on the Paris White Nights event, when the museums stay open all night,” Katz recalled. “We were very intrigued and asked if we could get involved on a national basis, and she was very open to the idea.”
Fast forward to Thursday, which happens to be the same night Neiman’s cuts the ribbon on its 41st store at The Bravern in Bellevue, Wash.
“Our goal is to give people a reason to come out and have a good time and see the latest fashions of the season,” Katz affirmed. “If, as a side benefit, we do business that night, fine, and we hope they will be intrigued to come back and shop.”
Given broad creative license, the stores came up with events including psychic readings, fashion scavenger hunts and art exhibits along with designer appearances, fashion and accessory presentations, trunk shows, beauty events and celebrity guests.
Neiman’s in Beverly Hills has two events: a show of the season’s trends presented by Lisa Love, Vogue’s West Coast editor and an exhibit and “Traffik” book signing by fashion photographer Norman Jean Roy.
The unit in Short Hills, N.J., is going big on entertainment with a concert by New York rock band Vicio; a fashion passport game with prizes; feng shui consultations; a party in cosmetics; a fashion show, and cocktails and samplings by local restaurants from steak to cupcakes.
New York's Block Party: Stores Ramp Up for FNO

Here, a listing of highlights at stores around New York City.
Macy's: Eight stores across the five boroughs will participate, with the Queens Center unit at 5 p.m. the official kickoff with a performance by “Hair” cast members. Macy’s chairman, president and chief executive Terry Lundgren, Michael Kors, a few surprise celebrities and Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour will be at a Vogue pop-up trend shop. Wintour and Kors will sign the official Fashion’s Night Out T-shirt for the first 50 customers.
Macy’s Herald Square will feature Tommy Hilfiger, Rachel Roy debuting her fusion line, jazz by the Michael Fredo Jazz Trio and Kors launching his latest fragrance, Very Hollywood Michael Kors. The 34th Street windows will have a satellite exhibit of the Crossing the Line art festival by the French Institute Alliance Française. Reality TV star Jill Zarin will cap the night off with a shoe shopping party, and cosmetics counters, fragrance bars and other departments will have perks.
“We have some new ideas up our sleeve,” said Lundgren. “We never had Anna Wintour do a personal appearance. She’ll be kicking off the event at our Queens Center store. We want to make sure we’re supporting our other stores in the five boroughs. Queens is a perfect target. It’s a fantastic suburban store. Anna and her assistants will be helping shoppers pull outfits together. It’s all about affordable fashion in our stores and wearing it the way someone of Anna’s taste and style would approve and appreciate. But there’s also plenty happening at Herald Square. I don’t think everyone fully understands it will be very difficult for the U.S. economy to recover until consumers start consuming again. Any ideas that we have to encourage appropriate spending have potential to be very good for the economy. Our mission is to make people feel like it’s OK to buy fashion again and do so appropriately within your budget.”

Bergdorf Goodman: Zac Posen will paint one-of-a-kind dresses modeled by Anna Cleveland in the Fifth Avenue windows. Padma Lakshmi, Bravo’s top chef, will have a “cook-off” with Cynthia Rowley, Edward Bess, Gilles Mendel, Lela Rose, Naeem Khan and Peter Som. There will also be a Vogue beauty photo exhibit; guest bartenders Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen; André Leon Talley, Donna Karan, Linda Fargo and Robert Verdi playing “Fashion Rules,” and a conversation with Isaac Mizrahi. A host of designers will sign T-shirts benefiting the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center Foundation and those donating new or gently used clothing to the NYC AIDS Fund will receive a gift from Le Metier de Beaute while supplies last.
With all that’s going on at the store for FNO, “It is an expense, but we believe in it and support it to our fullest ability,” said Jim Gold, president and chief executive officer. “Hopefully there will be a short-term impact but more importantly it has a longer-term impact and brings the fun back to fashion retailing. You can lay down and do nothing or beat the drum and create excitement and come up with fresh new big ideas, and that’s what this is all about.”
Saks Fifth Avenue: Over 60 designers and fashion luminaries including Carolina Herrera, Chris Benz, Elie Tahari, David Yurman, Aerin Lauder, Bobbi Brown, Frédéric Fekkai and Donna Karan, who launches an in-store shop, will be at the flagship. William Rast founders Trace Ayala and Justin Timberlake will kick off the brand’s pop-up shop in the store. Saks will have a red carpet, DJs, more than 7,000 cosmetic giveaways as well as brow shaping, hand massages, minifacials, skin care consultations, makeovers and tarot card readers, and complimentary clean-ups in John Allan’s men’s salon.
“I am curious how will the consumer will respond,” said Stephen I. Sadove, chairman and ceo. “I don’t know that it’s about purchasing. I am not looking at this as generating ‘x’ amount of sales. I don’t see it as a one-night thing. I am much more excited about getting people in the store, about the longer-term effect, and setting a positive buzz about fashion. This is a celebration of fashion, not an off-price shopping event.”

Lord & Taylor: There will be a Patrick McMullan photo exhibit, Vogue editor Lauren Santo Domingo hosting “Front Row at the Shows,” where she shares style tips as McMullan shoots the scene; a performance by the cast of “Girls Night: The Musical”; Mandi Norwood signing copies of “Michelle Style,” and hunks from the 2010 NYC Firefighters Calendar signing their calendar.
