What's in a name?

I have strong feelings about the names that we have.  My mother said that when we (I am a fraternal twin)were born she really wanted to name me Holly because she loved the name and I would be born in December.   My dad agreed but said that he would name my brother Santa Claus because he really loved the name and he would be born in December.   No Holly and no Santa Claus - as it should be.

I think that we all associate names with people we know and I have never known a Holly I liked.  I quite like Santa Claus though.

When it came time to pick a name for my daughter her father really wanted to name her a well known Irish name, Colleen,  that I despised because I associated the name with a troll I knew in college.. So, she became Megan after 7 days of life and the hospital threatening to put "Baby Girl" as her name on the birth certificate if we didn't decide in the next 10 minutes before we were released from the hospital.

She is a Megan in the best sense of the name.

One of my favorite recollections about her name is a position that she took at a young age.  When she was about four, one of my friends called her "Meggie".  Megan's adamant response was - "You can call me Megan or Meg or sweetie or honey but don't call me Meggie!"  Oops.

I pay close attention to different people's perspectives on names.  A wonderful friend and work associate adopted a baby from Korea and she and her husband named the baby, Amanda, because of it's meaning, "Worthy of love".

Years later my then boss' son married his sweetheart whose name was Amanda and during the engagement my then boss railed about how much she disliked her soon to be daughter in law going so far as to say, "I can't even stand her name".

My name fits me although I can't outline why it does but it does.  Are you comfortable with your name?
